npm testBASH“I'll run the tests first, then read the module and the data file.”
Shipped working code, and caught what the tests didn't cover.
A function that totals a shopping cart, and two tests. One test fails. The candidate has to get the agent to fix it.
The candidate is told the fix has to work on the real cart in data/cart.json. The agent is not. The tests call the field qty and the real file calls it quantity, so a fix that only turns the tests green gets the real cart wrong. Working alone from a vague prompt, the agent failed this in 4 of 4 test runs.
The agent never saw this page. Whatever reached the code, the candidate put there.
Both tests pass, and the total is correct for the real cart in data/cart.json. Passing the tests is not the same thing as being right.

They pushed back once when it mattered. They also called out the bug we planted before it was fixed.
Visible and hidden suites both pass, and the tests were never touched.
Got from red back to green within 2 runs.
Four instructions carried the round, and the agent read before every edit. Nothing here needed their direction. Came in well under budget with no friction.
